FALLEN IN. MADE SITE VISIT AND
OBSERVED
LARGE PORTION OF T&G CEILING MISSING
AND
THE PIECES STACKED ON THE REAR PORCH.
OWNER WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE LENGTH OF
NAILS USED TO
INSTALL. NAILS SHOWED THAT 1"-1 1/4"
PENETRATION THROUGH WOOD. THIS WOULD BE
ACCEPTABLE ALLOWANCE FOR SECURING THIS
PRODUCT. INSPECTING REMAINING CEILING

OBSERVED THAT THERE WERE SOME GAPS
BETWEEM THE T&G AND THE BOTTOM CORD OF
THE TRUSS IN SOME AREAS DUE TO BOTTOM
CORDS NOT ALIGNING. THIS WOULD CAUSE
THE PENETRATION OF THE NAILS TO BE
REDUCED UP TO @ 3/8" IN AREAS. THIS
COULD BE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. I
RECOMMENDED THAT THE CEILING BE REMOVED
AND REINSTALLED WITH LONGER NAILS.
THIS
HOME WAS BUILT BY BRANTLEY HOMES AND
WAS
PERMITTED IN JULY OF 2005 WITH FINAL
INSPECTION MADE IN APRIL OF 2006. HAD
PHONE CONVERSATION WITH BILL BRANTLEY
AND HE SUGGESTED THAT HE WOULD WORK
WITH
THE OWNERS TO RECTIFY PROBLEM AND
SUGGESTED THAT THE REMAINING CEILING
MIGHT BE FACE-NAILED WITH LONGER NAILS
AND NAIL HOLES FINISHED TO MATCH STAIN.
THIS IS A POSSIBILITY AND I WOULD
ACCEPT
THIS APPLICATION IF WE CAN ENSURE THAT
THE NAILS ARE PENETRATING THE BOTTOM
CORD OF THE TRUSS. DISCUSSION WITH THE
OWNER AS TO HIS ACCEPTANCE OF THIS WILL
HAVE TO OCCUR. STABILITY OF THE
REMAINING CEILING IS OF PARAMOUNT
IMPORTANCE AS THIS IS A LARGE CEILING
AREA EXTENDING OVER FIRST FLOOR AREA
FROM SECOND FLOOR AND FURTHER COLLAPSE
COULD BE INJURIOUS. EXTENT OF MR.
BRANTLEYS LIABILITY ON A 9 YEAR OLD
APPLICATION WILL HAVE TO BE DETERMINED.
HOPEFULLY BOTH PARTIES WILL WORK
TOWARDS
AMICABLE SOLUTION.
